A few years ago back in college, I fell into the worse rut of my life. I was 21, I had enough credits to be a junior but had not completed any courses in my major. I was crushed from a life of partying,  one-night stands that I tried turning into long-term one-night stands, and one failed relationship after another.  I went from going to the gym 4-5 times a week to 4-5 times a month if that.  I stayed in bed all day because I was too hung over to walk to class.  Things were going downhill and fast. There’s a word for this that I wouldn’t learn until a few years later – depression.

Definitely NOT made in America. Gotta Love those Ukranians. Look at this camera man over here on the ground. I bet these girls are like "Is this guy serious?"

After two semesters of this life style, I decided to take a semester off and “recalibrate”. I knew I would finish school but I needed to get refocused and figure out where my life was going.  I moved back home after living parent-free for 4 years which just about killed my social life but at the time it was the best thing for me. I went through a slew of books, music, speeches, and anything I could find to get out of this ditch I found myself in.  I had always been a good student so the question I started asking was “What happened?“. The following is a completely true story. Names and events are factual.

Women today aren't waiting around for a guy to save them. They've got their own tools and resources. But they are still attracted to go-getters and those who pursue their goals!

More or less.

Around 10,000 B.C., there were a group of cave dwellers consisting of a few men, women and children. On one particular morning, a man named Ed “Soon-To-Be-Eaten” Johnson races back into the cave to tell the rest of the group that there are a pack of tigers pacing around outside. This is the conversation that took place verbatim: Read more…

When the Art of Text post went up a few months ago, I hadn’t realized that there was a deeper, underlying issue that was bubbling up beneath the surface. While texting is certainly “newer” technology, it was really the result of over a decades worth of communication that was slowly moving towards a new direction.  What may surprise many is that it was the corporate world in the 90s that brought computers into our homes. While kids had Nintendo and Sega, purchasing a $2,000 plus computer was a luxury that only the adults could afford. Read more…

All Glory Is Fleeting, Part II – An Exclusive Interview with Robert Greene

(Editorial Note: Be sure to read Part I of this interview)

Ethan Bishop:  In Lesson 7 – Know Your Environment from the Inside – Out; Connection; you state that to succeed in life and business, you must first connect with your audience and build outwards instead of starting with your idea and finding your audience. That seems like obvious advice yet so many organizations fail at this simple concept. What are some ways that leaders can keep themselves “connected” with the audience? As we continue to rise within our respective social groups and organizations, how can we retain the ability to make confident decisions whilst still keeping our “audience” in mind? Read more…

As a young boy growing up in Memphis,Tennessee in the 1920s, my Grandfather loved to tell us stories of how he would pick up dinner table chairs by one of the legs and march around the house shouting “POWER”. Perhaps its by no coincidence at all that in 2001 when I finally saw a book entitled “The 48 Laws of Power(click here for a quick review) sitting on the top shelf of a Barnes and Noble, that I thought back to my Grandfather’s story. Every plan fails once you engage the enemy.” – Sun Tzu

Or as Mike Tyson put it:

Everyone has a plan ‘till they get punched in the mouf” – Mike Tyson

Athletes tend to be the ones that visibly display this focus, however, all individuals that have succeeded in the upper realms of their field no what it is to have this supreme confidence in the outcome.

You see the look on the faces of the greatest athletes of all time, the best businessmen and women, and people at the top of their field – a hyperawareness and focus, a look not of anger but one of supreme command over one’s self. A Mental Toughness.  The look of “grim determination.”

The ability to see task through is one that will allow you to master any and everything. Whether you are mastering an instrument, horseback riding, or just trying to make the fanciest drink at the bar, you have to enter a state that blast through any resistance in your way and quiets your subconscious mind of defeat and self-doubt.

Chances are, you have entered this state of mind. Whether you were studying for the SATs, GREs, a final exam that you had to pass or about to go out for an audition, submit a book proposal, or release a new song, you already know what it means to have this grim determination. It’s the underlying belief that “If I don’t get this done, nobody is going to do it for me.” It’s a sense that you need to control your emotions from becoming overly happy or overly sad. That you will survive whatever obstacles come in your way.

I keep the following speech given by Al Pachino in A Whole Nine Yards. It might be the greatest inspirational speech ever given to those who need to stay focused. I have it bookmarked on my computer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO4tIrjBDkk

Despite the fact that this is a movie about football, the speech can be applied to anything you hope to accomplish whether its lifting a weight, sticking with a diet, getting into grad school, or simply resisting the need to go out when you know you have to get something done.

Rickson Gracie, arguably the BEST practitioner of Brazilian JiuJitsu has the look of "grim determination." Even after winning the fight, he remains calm in seeing the outcome through to the end.

I like to think of myself as an “Optimistic Realist”. I hope for the best but prepare for the worst. It’s this type of mental toughness that will pull you through tough times.

How far are you willing to fight and die for that inch?

If one thing is for certain, there is a definite quality to people who make things happen. Their movements are surrounded by motion and allure. They have the ability to make you want to join them in their journey.  On a personal level, these individuals have an ability to move with energy. Their presence electrifies and inspires the people around them.

final_fullres

You want to feel the energy flowing out of you. Think of this energy as you are in the middle of the hottest club in Miami and you are bringing the spirit to those around you. Lift people up!

Semper Momentus Maximus was certainly not used by any Romans that I’m aware of, however, I’d imagine, if it had been used, it would surely mean the following – Always with Great Momentum. As with all things in English, it sounds infinitely better in Latin.

Most people have experienced this infectious energy that floods into your pores like a cologne or perfume.  You feel this energy in your body and afterwards you are left in a noticeable glow. Many people have experienced this “glow”. It’s as if we have caught on fire and everything just “works”.

When you move with momentum, you are in the zone; you see relationships between things clearer; you solve problems faster, and when you are out speaking with people, it’s clear your game is ON. Before you go out, you want to bring the energy and act with motion.

The goal is not to be noticeably flamboyant and wanting of attention, people are drawn to you through your actions and your ability to pick their spirits up.  We tend to want to be around those who give off this energy as opposed to those who suck you dry. We all know these types – simply being around these individuals is a task.  Their self-absorption with their own problems brings everyone down. When in social settings, distance yourself from these individuals.

You need to keep the energy going in a positive direction and if the conversation seems like its dying, follow Man Law #41 Initiate the Approach, Initiate the Departure. Remove yourself from the situation and come back when the energy is back on an upward spin.

The way to get into this heightened state is to mentally psych yourself up. You can think of this as a personal pep rally or a pre-game tailgate where the goal is to enter the most positive state of mind possible.  It’s important to let the things that don’t matter simply slide.

When you have this momentum with you, you’ll find all things come easier and people will naturally be attracted to you.
